We believe that good chemistry contributes to the prosperity and well-being of a sustainable society. Our commitment to a sustainable future focuses on the six UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) where our company and our products make the biggest contribution.


A focused approach

In 2019, Nouryon conducted a Materiality Assessment amongst internal and external stakeholders to identify the issues that are of most importance to the company, such as health and safety; sustainable innovation and product development; and energy use and greenhouse gas emissions. Combined with our market-focused company strategy, this helped identify the UN Sustainable Development Goals where we can have the most impact.

SDG 2: End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture

Our products help increase agricultural productivity and yields while reducing unnecessary energy consumption through sustainable business practices. Agriculture is one of the key growth markets of our company strategy. We provide building blocks for producing fungicides and herbicides, adjuvants and formulation aids as well as chelated micro-nutrients that help plants grow.

SDG 3: Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages

Nouryon focuses on good health and well-being in two ways. Firstly, we prioritize Health and Safety in all our operations and we are a leader in our industry when it comes to people, process and product safety.

Secondly, Nouryon provides a range of essential building blocks for the manufacture of pharmaceuticals and products for personal care and water treatment, supporting the wellbeing of a growing population.

SDG 9: Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation

A sustainable future will require new products and processes. At Nouryon, we focus on collaborative innovation and new digital technologies to help build the factories of the future and develop new, more sustainable products such as bio-based and biodegradable ingredients for personal care and cleaning products, which will form the foundation of a sustainable society.

SDG 12: Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns

As the “industry of industries,” the chemical sector plays a key role in enabling more sustainable and circular production, and improving the eco-efficiency of our factories is a key component of our approach to sustainability. In addition, we continuously strive for more sustainable and circular production methods that rely on renewable feedstocks such as barley instead of fossil fuels.

SDG 13: Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts

Nouryon recognizes that climate change has a fundamental impact on the global environment, society and business economics and we aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions along our value chain.

In support of the UN Paris Climate Agreement, we have significantly reduced our emissions over the last decade and are committed to reach our target of 20% carbon emission (scope 1 &2) reduction between 2020 and 2025 through new technologies, more efficient processes and the sourcing of more low-carbon energy.In addition to improving our own operational footprint, many of our products help our customers become more sustainable. For example, our chelates help pulp and paper manufacturers to significantly reduce their energy consumption.
