One of our Specialty Chemical business units, Pulp and Performance Chemicals (PPC) has an outstanding opportunity for a passionate, experienced professional to assume the role of Health, Safety, Environment & Security (HSE&S) Coordinator.   This position will guide site management to develop and ensure implementation of policies, an improvement plan and best practices for the site. Acting as a change agent for HSE&S culture and continuous improvement and role model for ensuring compliance/commitment with HSE policy and procedures.


T he location for this position is Augusta, Georgia. This position reports to the Site Manager and will be a member of the Site Management Team.


This is a small, non-union site with only 35 employees.  This position does not have any direct reports and manages the HSE&S function for the site.
 
Our Pulp and Performance Chemicals business has long been supplying industries worldwide with quality ingredients that are essential for manufacturing thousands of everyday products. Our pioneering portfolio includes bleaching chemical and systems, colloidal silica solutions, expandable microspheres, and silica packing and columns. You’ll find our essential ingredients in a whole host of products, including tissues, diapers, packaging, shoe soles, automotive coatings and sealants, decorative paints and coatings, smartphones, champagne corks, concrete, wallpaper, batteries, LED lamps, and pharmaceuticals. We work with industrial customers all over the world who count on our trusted and reliable brands, such as Eka, Expancel, Kromasil and Levasil Colloidal Silica.


Responsibilities
Guide line management to develop and ensure implementation of HSE policies, plans and practices for the Site in line with the HSE Policy, Directives, Rules & Procedures (HSE Procedures) and in compliance with relevant regulatory requirements; together with and in support of line management, set the safety culture and manage hazards. Establishing and maintain the HSE Management System
Be a change agent for continuous improvement in the HSE standards, performance, capability and culture of the Site in line with the  programs (Safety Common Platform); along with line management, spend time on the shop floor and act as a role model for ensuring compliance with and commitment to HSE Policy, Directives, Rules & Procedures, including its risk tolerance criteria, progressing towards leading level of HSE maturity
Acting as an effective coach for the Site by leveraging and extending its HSE knowledge through personal participation in HSE BU network for delivery of the Safety Common Platform, HSE Faculty learning programs, auditing and/or incident investigation and/or through training activities within the Site as well as through personal functional development, achieving company expectation related to HSE capability of the Site
Contribute to the development of the HSE strategy for design, deployment and delivery of the  HSE Policy, Directives, Rules & Procedures and Safety Common Platform for the entity at the next higher level, in order to ensure alignment of objectives and performance of the Site
Others :
Advice - Act as internal consultant, formulate and present possible solution directions for non-standard HSE questions not captured in procedures
HSE systems and reporting - Develop, manage, implement and maintain HSE management systems and ensure the registration of HSE related activities
Stakeholder management - Build and maintain a network with in- and external HSE professionals and ensure transfer of HSE knowledge, requirements and best practices within the company
Ensure safety inspections, hazard analysis, and appropriate reports are completed
Works in close cooperation with Site Leadership Team to ensure optimized performance of the site
Performs other duties as assigned by the Site Manager
Formulates, signs off guidelines and procedures and implements standards for functional discipline
Can manage a complex organizational environment (internally and/or externally) and knows how and when to influence
Significantly contributes to several specific areas of HSE agenda 2 - 4 years ahead (i.e. process safety, environmental liability)
Has good knowledge of and signs off processes within own HSE discipline taking into account the relation with other disciplines on SBU level within defined HSE framework

Job Requirements
MS or BS in Environmental Health/Engineering, Safety Science, Industrial Hygiene, or Chemical Engineering
At least Five(5) Years of Solid experience with HSE_ Security function in a Chemical plant environment
Proficient in Microsoft Office programs (Excel, PowerPoint, Word)
Relevant experience as a Leader on Hazard Study and/or Process Safety Management (PSM)
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Good organizational and analytical skills
Leadership competencies:
Effective leadership, strong interpersonal skills, performance management, and people development skills required with the ability to negotiate and positively influence others
Go to Gemba to understand
Must be able to work in a team oriented environment
Make your own commitment to safety visible everyday
Implement and support standard process
Functional competencies:
Demonstrated ability to handle multiple projects and tasks with clear prioritization and organizational skills
Broad and specialized knowledge of the AkzoNobel functional role and HSE management system, including Process Safety & Asset Integrity, HSE Critical Leadership, Site Hazards and Risks, Behaviour Based Safety and Managing Contractors
Effective communicator with all levels in the organization (employees, managers, customers, regulatory), ability to convince others, gain agreement or acceptance of plans, activities and ability to move others willingly towards a desired goal or course of action
Ability to analyse and solve complex problems using SPC, Pareto diagrams, SWOT analysis, and cause and effect analysis
Ability to make decisions and take action consistent with current developments and trends
Ability to drive continuous improvement of the processes, policies, standards
Relevant experience in different multiple units, disciplines, locations and/or other companies
