Purpose/Key Objective of the Job
 
The Sr. Regional PSRA Toxicologist has primary responsibility to provide toxicology and risk assessment support for new and existing products, raw materials and processes within the Americas region of Nouryon. The position works in close cooperation with other regional toxicology members in other regions and the wider PSRA team. Additionally, this role closely works with other functions and the business to understand and reduce potential risks of the Nouryon product portfolio.
 
The Toxicologist must understand and utilize current toxicological evaluation and product safety approaches that ensure that products are acceptable for their intended use, meet regulatory requirements, and advance business objectives. This role will provide tactical and strategic support to Nouryon’ s business units regarding new product development and existing product support regarding scientific principles of human health and environmental risk assessments to help support the business in decision-making.
 
Responsibilities
Main responsibilities of the Sr. PSRA Toxicologist; Americas include;
•Prepare/oversee toxicological registration dossiers for registration of chemicals in accordance with current legislation and country requirements and for application related registrations of products (biocides, food, cosmetics, etc.).
•Prepare and review scientific reports including qualitative and quantitative risk assessments to ensure they reflect appropriate scientific knowledge
•Determine and evaluate exposure scenarios under defined (EPA, etc.) specifications and applications (food, medical device, etc.)
•Design, execute, and interpret toxicological studies to meet regulatory requirements and ensure safety of Nouryon products.
•Support the business by understanding guidance, requirements, and methodologies of various regulatory programs in the Americas region (e.g., US EPA, US FIFRA, EU, US FDA, various U.S. states’ risk assessment programs, etc.)
•Communicate and advise clearly, scientifically-based safety positions and recommendations to Nouryon management.
•Negotiate with authorities and regulatory bodies in the Americas region on occupational exposure limits, substance evaluations and product approvals.
•Chair the TSCA 8(e) committee, manage TSCA 8(e) program and submit necessary reporting to authorities
 
External Project Management
•Support the identification, selection and management of external consultants performing toxicological studies or risk assessments on behalf of Nouryon business
•Design manage, and review toxicology programs and corresponding studies conducted by external resources.
 
Regulatory Monitoring & Other Support
•Advise business, technology teams, and customers on chemical and application laws as they relate to human health and exposure
•Track state, federal, and international chemical legislative and regulatory developments and identify areas of risk for Nouryon
•Contribute in regional and global industry associations, consortia and efforts as required. Maintain and engage with consultants, experts and networks to ensure relevant considerations are understood and addressed.
 
The position has a medium level of autonomy; they will act as voice of Americas PSRA for toxicology related activities; both within and outside of the organization. This role will have authority to make decisions with minimal approval from higher manager/supervisor;
•Regional toxicology work processes, interface with stakeholders
•Decisions related to testing strategies, study monitoring and assessments
•Proposals on test strategies for registrations and other compliance issues
 

Job Requirements

    
Job Requirements
•Master’s degree in chemistry, biology, toxicology or related discipline 
•7+ years of chemical industry experience (specialty chemicals, polymers)
•Experience working with chemical regulations and regulatory agencies
•Regulatory affairs/product safety experience
•Professional experience in exposure scenarios and risk assessment of substances
•Strong written and oral communication skills
•Project and program management experience
•Strong analytical and organizational skills
•Be able to work in an ambiguous environment and be flexible and adaptable
•Must have excellent complex problem-solving, enjoys teamwork, clear communication, and strategic thinking skills.
 
Preferred Qualifications
•Ph.D. in Toxicology, or a related science
•Experience working with biocides and food contact
