Laboratory Technician  

The Laboratory Technician is responsible for all activities regarding Quality Assurance (QA), Quality Control (QC) and Quality Management System related to the Duluth site. Lab Tech refers to the process or set of processes used to measure and assure the quality of a product. Lab Technician refers to the process of meeting products to consumer expectations.
This person is a member of the Quality Control Unit that is responsible for release of finished product for shipment.

Principal accountabilities
•             This person understands lab testing schedules and plant analytical needs.
•             Actively participates in coordination activities of the lab’s work to achieve lab and site goals.
•             Routinely performs analytical testing in all areas of the laboratory. 
•             Performs laboratory assignments with accuracy, thoroughness, promptness and consistency.
•             Provides Quality Control function for finished products.
•             Makes decisions concerning suitability of product in relation to product specific specifications as well as customer requirements.
•             Generates reports and COAs as needed.
•             Interfaces with internal customers concerning test results and assisting in trouble-shooting of plant problems.
•             Handles various laboratory administration duties: requisitions, manage work requests, record keeping
•             Responsible for having a good working knowledge of the Duluth Quality and Responsible Care systems and is responsible for helping maintain and improve these systems in the laboratory.
•             Responsible for providing leadership in the areas of safety and work team development. 
•             Supports a positive and professional working environment within the laboratory / plant.
•             Contributes to development of lab goals and other methods to continually improve lab processes.
•             Shares knowledge and helps trouble-shoot lab processes.
•             Participates in the education of new employees and in cross training of all back-up laboratory personnel.
•             Ensures that prompt and reliable laboratory service is provided to the plant. 
•             Provides assistance in the trouble-shooting, utilization and minor repairs of lab instruments used in the main laboratory and the process labs.
•             Ensure that measurement system is capable in terms of accuracy, precision, and stability
•             Ensure correct and updated MES system quality documentation (e.g. specifications for raw material, in process, finished goods)
•             Support quality customer audit
•             Ensure and evaluate quality of raw materials to requirements and qualify and evaluate suppliers
•             Record quality non-conformances, investigate root causes, and suggest and track corrective actions
•             Performs other duties as assigned by the Site Manager.

•             Actively participate in Continuous Improvement efforts in Duluth
•             Actively participate in BBS program in Duluth
•             Act as 5S area responsible for the Laboratory
•             Drive performance through KPIs
•             Develop and improve metrics continuously

Job Requirements

Job requirements, theoretical qualifications and practical experience
Technical education and experience can substitute.
3+ years of analytical experience related to laboratory instrumentation is required. Technical experience can substitute.
•             Excellent verbal and written communication skills
•             Must be able to work in a team-oriented environment
•             Ability to creatively solve problems while maintaining a timely and cost-effective approach
•             Good organizational and analytical skills
•             Ability to work under pressure in a deadline driven environment
