Nouryon has an outstanding opportunity for an Accounting Specialist Sales and Use Tax in Houston, TX.


  • Lead the direct and indirect (sales and use) tax filing packages in particular the audit process
  • Manage the coordination of filings within Specialty Chemicals
  • Liaison between the Regional Accounting Center and the tax department


Key Responsibilities

  • This position is responsible for preparing and filing US tax returns, sales and use tax returns, completing tax provisions, estimating federal tax payments, maintaining income tax payable accounts, audit queries, and performing local tax reporting and activities for the company.
  • Responsible for sales and use tax audits in various jurisdictions.
  • Requires a knowledge about US federal and state income tax, sales and use tax concepts, practice and procedural in various jurisdictions.
  • Requires analytical focus; manipulating large amounts of data and analyzing trend for business decisions.
  • Specific emphasis on detecting account discrepancies and investigating further to reconcile.
  • Demonstrates ability to plan and accomplish work to ensure critical tax deadlines are met.
  • Coordinates with other Accounting personnel, numerous departments, and external consultants.
  • Candidate must possess ability to monitor tax legislative changes and communicate effectively any changes that impact the company.
  • Good understanding of tax law and stay up to date with current tax changes.
  • Be responsible for sales and use tax account reconciliation and monthly tax return.
  • Provide day-to-day support of sales tax questions to accounting personnel.
  • Execute financial reports with appropriate due diligence and as prescribed in the Financial & Economic Manual (FEM) needed for tax matters
  • Other departmental non-routine projects/assignments as requested
  • Manage indirect (sales and use) tax audits
  • Property tax coordination with various third party providers
  • Act as back-up to the unclaimed property specialist
  • Advise on complex tax accounting issues
  • Understands and has knowledge of IFRS and FEM
  • Identify opportunities to improve and automate processes and controls and drive continuous improvement
  • Drive changes in policies (e.g. training / SOP / policy / communications)


Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Finance and 7+ years of relevant accounting work experience.
  • MBA/CPA preferred
  • Knowledge of direct and indirect Tax required
  • Tax background either by education or work experience required
  • Knowledge in specialized accounting areas such as Tax, Fixed Assets, Inventory and/or Financial Reporting
  • Strong understanding of general accounting principles and IFRS
  • Experience in SAP; proficient in  Microsoft Office (Excel, Word and Outlook); experience with Hyperion Financial Management a plus
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Highly analytical; accurate with an attention to detail
  • Ability to build relationships with customers/stakeholders in a multi-national environment
  • Drive standardization across BUs in the region and guards the integrity and quality of the delivered accounting in the specific area
  • Preferably has working experience in one or more business units / SMUs
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced team environment and meet strict deadlines and manage pressure. Overtime may be required during month end close, tax deadlines and other critical projects.
