Nouryon expands carbon disulfide business in China

9 May 2019 - News

Nouryon (formerly AkzoNobel Specialty Chemicals) is expanding its position in China for carbon disulfide (CS2), used in the production of viscose fibers and as an intermediate for the syntheses of products used in agriculture, rubber chemicals and mining.

The company has successfully licensed its state-of-the-art CS2 manufacturing technology to several partners in Asia-Pacific. As part of those licensing arrangements, surplus CS2 volumes can be marketed by Nouryon. The company recently made its first commercial delivery to China – the first time that CS2 has been imported there – and it also aims to license the technology to local viscose fiber producers.

“With these partnerships we grow with our CS2 customers, especially in China, which has one of the largest CS2 markets in the world,” said Egbert Henstra, Managing Director Ethylene and Sulfur Derivatives at Nouryon. “We firmly believe that we can provide a unique solution to Chinese viscose fiber producers by licensing our advanced and reliable CS2 technology.”

Nouryon’s CS2 technology allows for a high production capacity in a single, cost-effective continuous process. “What’s more, our reliable and mature technology is unique in its long operating time. Production units can operate for five years before there is a need to shut down for maintenance.”

Nouryon has its own CS2 production in South America, Europe and the US in addition to its partnerships with licensees in Asia-Pacific.
