50 years of experience, world-class people and the equipment to see beyond the naked eye.

The Analytical & Environmental Chemistry Deventer (AECD) is where Nouryon's deepest analytical knowledge goes to work on your hardest questions. More than 50 years of experience, world-class experts and state-of-the-art facilities across measurement and analytical science, materials technology and environmental testing.

Solving Your Challenges Using Our Expertise

When a formulation stalls, a material behaves in a way no one expected or you need to prove exactly what's inside, that's where we come in. The AECD brings deep expertise and high-level facilities across analytical, material and environmental sciences.

The Analytical & Environmental Chemistry Deventer (AECD) is part of the global Nouryon R&D center located in Deventer, The Netherlands. As a contract laboratory, our multidisciplinary approach enables us to deliver the most effective solutions to your business challenges in the fields of Research and Development, Regulatory Compliance and Manufacturing.

You can rely on the skills and core competencies we developed over the years within a broad range of (chemical) application areas.

We separate, identify and quantify analytes in your most complex matrices, from trace- to percentage-level and from small molecules to polymers. We choose the right sample preparation and detection method for your question.

Our capabilities include:

Small molecules

  • Liquid chromatography (HPLC/UHPLC) with UV, RI, ELSD, CAD, FLD or MS detection
  • Capillary zone electrophoresis with UV, conductivity or MS detection

Volatiles and gases

  • Gas chromatography with FID, TCD, ECD, HID or MS detection
  • SIFT-MS
  • Thermal desorption GC-MS

Macromolecules

  • Aqueous and organic size exclusion chromatography with triple detection
  • Pyrolysis GC-MS

We identify and quantify the chemical structure of your product using resonance, vibrational and mass spectrometry techniques, from bulk composition down to surface and sub-micron detail.

Our capabilities include:

  • Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and electron spin resonance (ESR) for structure elucidation and quantitative analysis, including solid-state and high-temperature measurements
  • Infrared, near-infrared and Raman spectroscopy, including hyperspectral imaging down to the sub-micron level

Mass spectrometry (QToF, ion mobility) for identification in simple and complex matrices, standalone or combined with chromatography (LC, GC)

We identify and quantify the elements in your product, from the ppt level up to bulk composition, whether you're tracking a metal catalyst, chasing an unwanted color or confirming a REACH submission.

Our capabilities include:

  • ICP-OES, ICP-MS and ICP-MS/MS for precise quantification of up to 61 elements per run, from ppt to percentage level
  • X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF) for fast, non-destructive element scans
  • CVAFS for ppt-level detection of mercury
  • Microwave digestion and fusion for sample pretreatment

We identify the exact functional groups and chemical properties in your product using ISO, NEN and Pharmacopeia-validated wet chemical methods.

Our capabilities include:

  • Titration for acidity/basicity, unsaturation (iodine value), OH groups, redox reactions and water content (Karl Fischer)
  • Combustion analysis for total and non-purgeable carbon (TOC/NPOC) and total nitrogen, including a supercritical water system for heavy matrices
  • Ion chromatography and capillary electrophoresis for element and ion valence speciation (such as Cr(III) vs Cr(VI) and SO32- vs SO42- ) down to ppm level
  • Kjeldahl nitrogen, color (Apha/Gardner), COD, gravimetric, pH and UV-VIS testing

We image and chemically map your materials from the visible scale down to the atomic level, revealing structure, composition and defects not visible by the eye.

Our capabilities include:

  • Optical, electron ( SEM, TEM) and atomic force microscopy for imaging from micron scale down to atomic resolution
  • EDX, XPS and ToF-SIMS for local chemical analysis and surface chemistry mapping
  • X-ray diffraction for crystallinity
  • A full suite of cutting, polishing and ion-milling techniques to prepare hard, soft and suspended samples

We detect and quantify permanent gases and volatile organic compounds in bulk concentrations or down to trace amounts, whether you're testing air quality, emissions or a new depolluting material.

Our capabilities include:

  • Gas chromatography with FID, TCD, ECD, HID or MS detection, plus gas-phase FTIR for permanent gases
  • Headspace and thermal desorption GC-MS with olfactory detection, and SIFT-MS for volatiles across a wide concentration range
  • Catalytic breakdown units and exposure microchambers to test depollution material performance

We evaluate the environmental behavior and safety profile of your products through standardized biodegradation studies, aquatic toxicity testing and key physico chemical measurements, generating high quality data to support robust environmental risk assessments.

Our capabilities include:

  • Biodegradation: (Ready) biodegradability testing to determine persistence and degradation kinetics (e.g. OECD 301D, 301F, 309)
  • Aquatic toxicity : Acute and chronic tests with standard aquatic species to derive EC/LC and no effect levels (e.g. OECD 201, 202)
  • Physico chemical properties to support risk assessment: e.g. water solubility, hydrolysis study, partition coefficient (log Kow) measurement
