Sodium chlorate is a powerful oxidizing agent primarily used in the pulp and paper industry for elemental chlorine-free pulp bleaching. It is produced at facilities in several countries and shipped under the brand Eka® SC in various forms and packaging. The production process is energy-intensive and involves electrolysis, but advancements in electrode design have reduced energy consumption and emissions, with hydrogen gas as a valuable side stream product. Most of our facilities are strategically located near renewable energy sources and/or customer sites to utilize bio-based energy and minimize the carbon footprint.
Hydrogen Peroxide is an environmentally friendly oxidizing agent used in various industries, including pulp bleaching, mining, and water treatment. It is produced at facilities in Norway, Sweden, Brazil, and the USA, and offered as stabilized aqueous solutions under the brand Eka® HP. The anthraquinone auto-oxidation process, improved by a patented fixed-bed catalyst, ensures efficient production with minimal emissions, while utilizing renewable energy sources wherever possible. Our Eka® HP PuroxideTM produced in Europe uses fossil-free hydrogen gas, achieving a near-zero carbon footprint and delivering products via low-emission transport options.
Our Integrated Manufacturing Model (IMM) is a facility located next to a customer's pulp mill, providing on-site, continuous production and delivery of chemicals. This benefits the customer by ensuring a reliable and efficient chemical supply, reducing transportation costs and supply chain disruptions.
Most recently, Nouryon completed the construction of new sodium chlorate and hydrogen peroxide facilities for a customer in the municipality of Ribas do Rio Pardo, Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. The project is one of the largest private-sector investments in Brazil, and production has started.

In line with the Responsible Care® initiative—a global effort by the chemical industry to improve health, environmental performance, and security—we conduct safety audits at our customers' production facilities. This initiative aims to enhance safety awareness and deepen knowledge about our chemical products.
Eka Engineering is the engineering and contracting division of our bleaching chemicals business, specializing in designing, building, and supplying chlorine dioxide plants and equipment to the pulp and chemical industries. Offering turnkey plants, upgrades, repairs, and comprehensive services globally, Eka Engineering leverages experienced personnel and world-class technology to provide customers with significant operational advantages.

As part of the former Swedish Nobel Industries, we can trace our history all the way back to the 1640's. Our own proud history starts in 1898 when Alfred Nobel, the founder of the Nobel Prize, was among those who started EKA -Elektrokemiska Aktiebolaget. Chlorine and alkali were our first products. Now we manufacture sodium chlorate, hydrogen peroxide and chlorine dioxide for the pulp and paper industry.
