Leading people and process safety
We continuously work to improve our safety performance and environmental footprint for the benefit of our employees, contractors, customers, neighbors, and the environment. Our goal is to continuously improve our performance, with the ambition to reach zero injuries, waste, and harm focusing people safety, process safety and product safety. Our recordable injury rate declined by 25% and our process safety rate declined by 23% in 2021 as compared to the prior year. 84% of our sites have certified Environmental Management Systems (EMS), e.g., ISO 14001 or RC14001 equivalent, and 88% have ISO-9001 certifications.
We are also a top-quartile performer in people safety, and over the past decade we have significantly reduced our environmental footprint. This includes several ambitious goals: we aspire to be a net zero organization by 2050.
We strive to deliver leading performance in health, safety, environment, and security (HSE&S) and regularly audit all of our sites.
Our operational efficiency program is focused on improving the Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) of all our assets. We continuously measure and analyze the operational effectiveness of our equipment, reduce losses and implement sustainable improvements in order to improve uptime, reliability and capacity. This enables us to increase our energy efficiency. We also focus on improving the “Right First Time” of our production leading to less corrections, rework or waste which further benefits energy efficiency.
For example, we are exploring ways to utilize lower emission steam in our facilities to meet our carbon reduction target, specifically steam usage at our Ningbo site in China, which represents a large portion of our steam usage.

The five carbon neutral sites in Brazil operated by Nouryon (Imperatriz, Eunápolis, Três Lagoas (2) and Jacareí), are part of the company’s Integrated Manufacturing Model, offering on-location sodium chlorate and/or chlorine dioxide production. Modern pulp mills normally generate excess utilities (e.g., such as steam and water from the pulping process) that can be used as fuel in other manufacturing processes. Nouryon uses renewable energy from our customers sourced primarily from biomass. These reused resources effectively lower the carbon footprint of the site while producing chemicals more efficiently. Simultaneously, on-site production reduces transportation requirements.
These five sites have low Scope 1 GHG emissions and reported zero Scope 2 GHG emissions, which has been independently assured by ERM CVS. These low, remaining emissions are offset by the purchase of certified carbon offsets, created from renewable energy projects.’
Safety performance recognition
Our safety performance has been recognized several times in recent years by external agencies such as ACC (American Chemistry Council).
