This year marked the 70th consecutive year that the Swedish Chemical Society organized Berzelius Days, a prestigious event that brings together over 300 high school students from across Sweden who are passionate about chemistry. Held at Stockholm University, the annual event aims to ignite and strengthen young people’s interest in chemistry by providing a platform for networking and learning. During the two-day event, the focus is on the significance of chemistry in society, and students listen to lectures on the role of chemistry in various fields.

Nouryon’s Commitment to Future Chemists

Nouryon proudly sponsored five scholars at this year’s Berzelius Days. The five scholars come from schools near our manufacturing sites in Stenungsund, Alby, Stockvik, Kvarntorp, and Bohus. The sponsorship highlights our commitment to nurturing future chemists and underscores our dedication to engaging and partnering with our local communities.

"We are delighted to contribute to promoting the next generation of chemists. Chemistry is a vital component of Swedish industry and significantly impacts the global competitiveness of nearly all sectors. Access to well-educated chemists is a prerequisite for our growth,'' said Ann Lindgärde, Senior Vice President Renewable Fibers and Country Coordinator Sweden at Nouryon. ''Nouryon is engaged in collaboration with the academic world to increase interest in engineering education. A good way to do this is to engage early in schools, and Berzelius Days is an excellent opportunity.''

Nouryon’s Presence at Berzelius Days

Nouryon also participated as an exhibitor at Berzelius Days. Our #Changemakers, Julia Prevander from Nouryon's Talent Acquisition team, and Malin Nejström, Research Engineer at our Innovation Center in Stockvik, represented the company and were onsite to meet the scholars and distribute goodie bags.

''It was fantastic to meet our scholars and discuss future career opportunities in chemistry,'' said Julia Prevander, Talent Acquisition Coordinator at Nouryon. “The fact that we also had the opportunity to present our company to so many different universities at the same time provided significant insights into the strong interest in chemistry in the country.”

A Tribute to Jacob Berzelius

The event is named after the Swedish chemist Jacob Berzelius, known for his groundbreaking discoveries and his influence in the world of chemistry, including the introduction of atomic weights and the discovery of the elements selenium, silicon, cerium, and thorium. Since 1956, Berzelius Days has been an annual meeting place for high school students with a passion for
chemistry.
