Signing of innovative energy supply agreement

Nuon is to supply flexible energy to three of AkzoNobel’s chemical production sites in the Netherlands as part of an agreement to purchase a total net volume of 1.5 TWh. The deal will allow AkzoNobel to take advantage of flexibility in its chemical production and its own electricity generation to balance fluctuations in energy supply to optimize costs.

Nouryon and Gasunie study scale-up of green hydrogen project to meet aviation fuels demand

Nouryon and Gasunie are studying an expansion of a planned green hydrogen unit at Delfzijl, the Netherlands. The feasibility study follows a deal to convert sustainable electricity into green hydrogen for SkyNRG. The plant could be scaled up from 20 megawatts to at least 60 megawatts – which allows for a conversion of 9,000 tons of green hydrogen a year.

Developing novel technology platform to manufacture a wide range of ethylene amines

AkzoNobel’s Specialty Chemicals business has developed a novel technology platform for producing ethylene amines and their derivatives from ethylene oxide. As well as significantly reducing raw material consumption per ton of product, it also offers a substantially improved cost and sustainability profile when compared with existing processes.

Nouryon doubles capacity for dicumyl peroxide in China

Nouryon has doubled production capacity for dicumyl peroxide (DCP) at its site in Ningbo, China after completing a major expansion project. The plant is the largest of its kind in the world and can now produce up to 38,000 tons per year of DCP, an organic peroxide used in the manufacture of polymers that need exceptional durability such as shoe soles and insulation for high-voltage cables.

AkzoNobel ramps up use of renewable energy with Vattenfall

A new contract with energy company Vattenfall will enable AkzoNobel to ramp up the supply of renewable electricity to its facilities in Sweden and Finland. Hydro power and wind already make up the majority of the electricity supplied by Vattenfall, and the companies have agreed to further increase the share of renewable energy to the facilities to 100% by 2020.

Start-up organizations partner with AkzoNobel on global chemistry challenge

AkzoNobel has teamed up with two organizations focused on supporting start-ups, Lux Research and StartupDelta. The partnerships will focus on developing business opportunities stemming from the company’s Imagine Chemistry start-up challenge. Designed to solve real-life chemistry challenges, the initiative has attracted more than 200 submissions.
