Technical Application Engineer - Asphalt

Purpose of the job

The Nouryon Asphalt India Applications Team supports customers across Asia with emulsifiers, adhesion promoters, and warm-mix additives, backed by high-quality technical service. The Asphalt business relies on its application laboratories to drive product optimization and process efficiency.

This role is for a detail-oriented asphalt specialist based in the Mumbai laboratory. The position focuses on projects that support internal continuous improvement and business growth initiatives. It is a 100% laboratory-based role with extensive interaction and collaboration with the R&D Asphalt laboratory at the Innovation Center in North America.

The Application Chemist reports hierarchically to the Sales Manager Asia, who leads the technical team in Mumbai, and receives technical direction and guidance from the R&D Manager Asphalt based in the USA.

The overall objective is to deliver high-quality, timely technical solutions aligned with business strategy, supporting the commercial team in maintaining and growing the asphalt business.

About the job (Job Responsibilities)

• Maintain and promote a safe work environment by complying with all safety policies and procedures and following safe work practices for personal and equipment safety in both the laboratory and the field, resulting in zero or minimal safety incidents and a clean, orderly work area.
• Maintain accurate and well-organized laboratory documentation, including laboratory notebooks; prepare clear project reports; compile monthly activity summaries; and use the project database effectively.
• Perform a significant volume of laboratory experiments and technical work as defined in project plans.
• Conduct R&D laboratory work including planning, sample preparation, asphalt emulsification, emulsion testing, binder testing, performance and rheological testing, reformulation work, data analysis, and other duties as assigned.
• Spend substantial time in the laboratory and proactively ask relevant questions to clarify requirements, expectations, and critical performance parameters.
• Ensure proper maintenance, calibration, and reliable operation of laboratory instruments.
• Maintain a high standard of laboratory cleanliness and hygiene.
• Adhere to company safety standards at all times and consistently demonstrate and promote Nouryon values.

We believe you bring (Education & Experience)

• BSc and MSc in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering; a PhD is a plus.
• Minimum 3–5 years of experience in asphalt, paints, polymers, coatings, or oilfield laboratory applications.
• Proven hands-on experience in laboratory data collection and analysis.
• Strong communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively with internal teams and colleagues across regions, demonstrating professionalism and integrity.
• Excellent documentation and record-keeping skills.
• Strong ability to prioritize tasks and projects, in close coordination with the cross-regional manager in North America.
• Demonstrated commitment to maintaining a clean, organized laboratory environment.
• Excellent organizational skills and a strong eagerness to learn.
• Strong team player with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
• Solid problem-solving skills and a proactive, “ownership” mindset.
• Strong process orientation and attention to detail.
• High ethical standards with respect to data accuracy and adherence to safety protocols.
• Strong, inherent focus on safety and maintaining a healthy working environment.
