At Nouryon, our global team takes positive action every day, to reach higher collectively and individually. We create innovative and sustainable solutions for our customers to answer society’s needs – today and in the future.

Background

Expancel® thermally expandable microspheres is a fantastic innovation from the 1980’ies, developed and commercialised in Sundsvall, Sweden. It is essentially an inflatable micro balloon, used as a blowing agent and light weight filler in various formulations, such as wine stoppers, shoe soles, automotive parts and packaging materials.

About the Thesis work

MSc thesis (30 p, 20 weeks) at Expancel, Nouryon Stockvik, spring 2027

Further improve the formulations of selected Expancel grades by fundamental and applied studies of the system to make the microspheres.

This thesis work deals with one important aspect of the societal need to move towards circularity and sustainability. In this context, the industry plays a key role in developing products and processes that utilize biobased raw materials to a much larger extent than we do currently. This particular degree project is aiming at exploring some new biobased raw materials for the production of thermally expandable microspheres. The work will consist both of small-scale synthesis of the microspheres followed by characterization of the materials using different analytical techniques such as thermal analysis using e.g. DSC and TGA, size distribution analysis using light scattering, morphological studies using microscopy, spectroscopic methods such as FTIR and NMR.
