About the job
Oversee the planning, scheduling, and execution of inspections of operating piping systems and equipment to monitor its integrity and extend equipment life; assure the completed product complies with engineering drawings specifications, nationally recognized industry codes, and good construction practices. This is a “run and maintain” focused role, and the ability to work with third parties effectively is critical.
In your future role as an API Inspector, you will
- Perform, run and maintain activities as listed below primarily at our Salisbury, North Carolina Chemical Facility.
- Support other Nouryon sites as required, with up to 50% travel to other locations.
- Develop, write, and maintain equipment files and computer programs which contain design data and drawings, documentation of work performed, repair history, corrosion history, and thickness trends to comply with regulatory laws and industry practice and aid in determining mechanical integrity and ensuring reliability.
- Provide maintenance and contractors across site with guidance regarding tools and techniques for welding, field installation, and pressure testing. Assure compliance to the site on local regulations like state commissioning if/as required.
- Review and analyze data from inspections on equipment reliability issues on request of maintenance engineers and provide feedback.
- Actively support capital projects process by providing expertise in welding, quality inspection and reliability input to the Engineering Group for equipment design, specification and purchase
- Support Hazard Studies (Consequence for failure) by providing reliability data of equipment and components.
- Perform routine thickness readings on required equipment (Piping and Pressure Vessels) and perform required calculations regarding those readings. (Long Term, Short Term, Rem life, etc)
- Ensure all fixed equipment Mechanical Integrity activities meet or exceed the corporate and local jurisdictional requirements
- Performs or oversees all API and NDE inspection activities, applying discretion to identify and select among viable options for fixed equipment life cycle maintenance compliant with applicable codes and regulations.
- Reviews/Creates inspection reports and performs condition assessments as judged appropriate.
- Provide Mechanical Integrity technical assistance and support the operating and maintenance departments to improve reliability, using applicable codes and regulations as starting point.
- Perform risk-based analysis, develops/modifies inspection plans (including initiating unscheduled inspections), coordinates/supervise inspections, evaluates inspection results, performs remaining equipment life cycle calculations, develops discretionary run/repair/replace recommendations, tracks inspection recommendations to closure and keeps all inspection data current and evergreen
- Participates in Investigations/Root Cause Failure Analysis and executes corrective action items assigned.
- Assist with MRAs and assist in development of MI PMs on all follow-up action items.
- Lead or assist developing repair plans and initiates corrective action work requests when necessary as a result of maintenance inspections
- Assist Planner and Operations in coordination and preparation of MI activities for shutdown/Turnaround work.
- Establish, monitor and apply judgment to optimize MI Preventative Maintenance (PM) plans
- Perform fitness for service level 1 assessment using API 579 for all damage mechanisms except for crack like indications
- Serve as a MI code application and jurisdictional resource to other engineers, mechanics and operators. Train, coach, and mentor mechanics in MI.
- Works with the Process Specialist and ensures recommendations are followed up and completed in a reasonable timeframe.
- Follow corporate and site inspection standards and review the Inspection Test Plans of all purchased capital assets to ensure consistency in our procurement and installation practices
- Participate on area capital project teams as MI Representative as necessary.
- Responsible for ensuring MI PMs and Recommendations are completed before due date.
- Supervises and directs contract inspectors and NDE technicians (including accepting or rejecting their work based on factors including but not limited to code and regulatory compliance), and ensures reports are complete
- Identify and deliver documented cost reduction opportunities (CIT).
- Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned, including assisting in the development / maintenance of the Capital Plan, area strategic strategies, department expense budgets, capital spending forecasts and KPI’s.
Health, Safety, Security & Environmental Specific Responsibilities
- Understand and help implement the site’s Operating Policy, and HSSE goals and objectives.
- Support and participate in on-going HSSE improvement activities and committees.
- Participate in audits facilitated by regulatory agencies such as local Railroad Commissions, Local Department of Licensing and Regulation, EPA, TCEQ, DOT, and OSHA.

We believe you bring
- Minimum of the following API Certifications required – API 510, API 570
- Minimum of ten (10) years of combined experience as an API Inspector/NDE Technician in the chemical, petroleum, or equivalent industry
- Proficient with computer programs (Excel, Word, IDMS, etc.) and strong verbal and written communication skills are required
- Able to wear respirator and fall protection equipment if needed
- Strong knowledge of inspection and repair requirements of API, ASME, NBIC and state/local regulations
- Strong working knowledge of damage mechanisms leading to equipment failure
- Proof of previous certification/qualification of UT thickness and any other NDE method certification/qualification.
- Must be able to work in plant environment, work at elevation
- Must be able to wear safety shoes, safety glasses, fall protection and hard hat
- Confined space trained and able
- CWI and STI/API 650 experience/certification a plus
