Committed to a sustainable future

Chemistry is essential for thousands of products we use every day and at Nouryon, we believe good chemistry is key to a sustainable future. Our approach to sustainability is based on three pillars: further improving our environmental footprint and safety performance; growing sales of our portfolio of sustainable solutions; and continuing to engage with our people and society to drive progress together.

We involve both internal and external stakeholders in the development and governance of our sustainability agenda and we disclose our results on an annual basis.

Becoming Safer & More Efficient Every Day

We continuously work on further improving our environmental footprint and safety performance. We are a top-quartile performer in safety, and we have reduced our carbon footprint per ton of product by almost a third between 2009 and 2019. We are committed to reducing our impact on the environment even further – working with customers, suppliers and new technology start-ups to become even safer and more efficient every day. We have set the goal to further reduce carbon emissions from our operations and energy use by 25 percent between 2020 and 2025 and to increase the share of low carbon and renewable energy to more than 60 percent by 2025.

Governance & disclosure

Sustainability is a cornerstone of our strategy to achieve long-term growth and we involve a wide range of experts and stakeholders in the development of our sustainability agenda.

Our focused approach is anchored in a Materiality Assessment conducted in 2019, which helped identify key sustainability issues that are most important to the company and where we can have the biggest impact.

Sustainability falls under the responsibility of the Nouryon Leadership Team, led by Charlie Shaver, Chairman and CEO. All members of the Leadership Team have ownership of sustainability topics and initiatives. Sustainability at Nouryon is steered by a global Sustainability Network, chaired by the Chief Sustainability & Communications Officer and consisting of representatives of all Businesses and key Functions across all regions. The Sustainability Network meets on a quarterly basis to discuss the progress of the sustainability agenda.

Environmental sustainability is managed directly by the Integrated Supply Chain to ensure its inclusion in every factory we operate around the globe. Responsibility for Compliance lies with the General Counsel and Corporate Secretary and a dedicated Chief Compliance Officer.

Starting with the 2019 Report, Nouryon discloses its sustainability agenda and Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) data on an annual basis.
