Sustainable practices in bleaching, oxidizing chemicals and technologies
We support our customers in reaching
their sustainability goals
We are dedicated to assisting our customers in achieving their sustainability goals by offering innovative solutions that enhance circularity and material efficiency.
Our commitment to supporting our customers in their Scope 3 emissions reductions is demonstrated through our circular production sites, low-carbon footprint products, and logistics options like rail deliveries and HVO100 fuels. Our use of water electrolysis without any direct emissions and internally produced hydrogen gas further exemplifies our dedication to lowering carbon footprints.
Through collaborative R&D, we actively participate in material recycling and emission reduction projects. We also partner with our customers to increase value chain material efficiency.
Low Carbon Footprint Products
Our portfolio includes Low Carbon Footprint Products; Hydrogen Peroxide and Sodium Chlorate. These products are designed to offer superior performance while minimizing environmental impact.
Circular Production Plants
We can offer a state-of-the art production plant located next to customer's pulp mills, often inside the perimeter fence. This collaborative approach not only minimizes emissions but also maximizes resource utilization. We call this Integrated Manufacturing Model.
Side Stream Hydrogen Utilization
In selected locations, we utilize side stream hydrogen from Sodium chlorate production internally. This sustainable practice helps to reduce emissions and improve energy efficiency across our operations.
Water Electrolysis
By employing water electrolysis in our Hydrogen peroxide plant in Rjukan, we contribute to the production of green hydrogen. The only inputs in the electrolysis process are water and electricity. Water electrolysis is a sustainable solution as it leverages renewable resources and produces minimal environmental impact, with water as the only byproduct.
Sustainable Logistics Solutions
Our logistics solutions are tailored to reduce carbon emissions through the use of rail deliveries. With the goal of reducing the number of transports, we can offer rental options for full trains in Sweden, ensuring efficient and eco-friendly transportation. We can also offer HVO100 low carbon fuels for selected destinations.
We produce Low Carbon Footprint Sodium chlorate and Hydrogen peroxide products, supporting the reduction of our clients’ Scope 3 Emissions. Through efficient processes and innovation, we ensure a low carbon footprint across the entire value chain. Our commitment to sustainability drives us to continuously improve every step, from manufacturing to delivery. Our Hydrogen peroxide serves as an effective bleaching agent, decomposing into oxygen and water.
When producing sodium chlorate the ingredients are salt, water and electricity.
For chlorate production: salt, water and fossil free electricity are used as raw materials.
Puroxide hydrogen peroxide production: carbon-free hydrogen gas from chlorate production together with oxygen from air are used as raw materials which gives a carbon footprint close to zero.
Deliveries: are made by train, or truck with HVO100 fuel when possible.
Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is produced from hydrogen gas (H2) and oxygen (O2). Traditionally, hydrogen gas is produced using fossil natural gas in a steam reformer. In contrast, Puroxide utilizes only fossil-free hydrogen gas.
Nouryon is the sole hydrogen peroxide producer that employs water electrolysis, where water (H2O) is split into hydrogen gas (H2) and oxygen gas (O2). The only raw materials used in this process are water, electricity, and oxygen.
Eka Engineering's Integrated Manufacturing Model concept can provide customers with on-site Sodium chlorate, Chlorine dioxide, and Hydrogen peroxide.
When establishing our Sodium chlorate plants, we strategically choose locations with access to renewable energy sources, minimizing our environmental impact.
The close proximity to the customer point-of-use reduces transportation, enhancing eco-efficiency and safety. Incorporating our internally generated hydrogen gas, produced from Sodium chlorate, into our Hydrogen peroxide production process substantially reduces our reliance on fossil fuels.
Sourcing electricity from biomass, effectively lowers our carbon footprint while enhancing the efficiency of chemical production.
Did you know that all of our 7 locations in Brazil are using 100% electricity from renewable sources?
Nouryon is the sole hydrogen peroxide producer in Europe that employs water electrolysis, where water (H2O) is split into hydrogen gas (H2) and oxygen gas (O2). We have been utilizing water electrolysis technology in our production plant in Rjukan since 1992. The only inputs used in this process are water, electricity, and oxygen.
Emission reduction
A prime example of our customer-centric sustainable solutions is our advanced technology for air pollution abatement, which effectively reduces nitrogen oxides (NOx) and sulfur oxides (SOx) in flu gases up to 95%.
Mining
To meet the increased demands for sustainability in the mining industry, we have together with Hypex Bio developed an efficient and sustainable technology for mining, underground and civil construction applications with low CO₂ footprint. This is a superior alternative to ammonium nitrate - enabled by our sustainable Hydrogen peroxide.
Water treatment
Our MicrOxTM Hydrogen peroxide technology effectively reduces micropollutants from wastewater, making it a perfect fit for water reuse or zero-discharge projects, where the water quality needs to be of high level for reuse in industrial processes.
Nouryon consistently invest in products, applications, and technology. Our global R&D and Technology organization fosters creativity, collaboration, and constantly optimize our processes to reduce environmental impact.
Recently, we joined forces with partners in the Emission Free Pulping (EFP) program to address the core process of pulping and identify prominent ways to improve the environmental footprint of the industry.
The EFP program is a five-year research program led by VTT and RISE, aiming to significantly reduce biomass burning and increase the product yield from wood from approximately 50% to around 70%. We view the EFP as a unique opportunity to develop fundamental knowledge for sustainable, “future-proof” pulping and to secure the necessary competencies for the future.
By the end of 2030, we have targeted reducing our absolute Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 40%. By 2050 we aspire to be a net zero organization, all versus a 2019 base year. Our commitment to sustainability and reducing our carbon footprint extends across our entire manufacturing network.
As part of our long-term Carbon Business Strategy, we are continuously exploring opportunities to transition other local sites to renewable energy.
