At the core of our company is a talented team of professionals with extensive experience in specialty chemistry. Their deep knowledge and commitment drive our innovation and success. Each team member brings a unique set of skills and a wealth of industry expertise, allowing us to contribute significantly to the pulp industry.

We believe that it is our people who truly make the company what it is today—a leader in delivering exceptional chemical solutions tailored for the unique needs of the pulp sector.

Nouryon works closely with customers to tackle their challenges and drive continuous development. We led the way in creating ECF technology for kraft pulp bleaching in the 1990s and later focused on reducing water usage in pulp mills. Today, we collaborate to innovate high yield pulping as printing and writing demand declines. Whether it's enhancing strength, brightness, using new raw materials, or adapting to new grades, we're here to support the transition.

Comprehensive Product Range for Pulp Industry Excellence

Efficient and Sustainable Sodium Chlorate Solutions for the Pulp and Paper Industry

Sodium chlorate is a powerful oxidizing agent primarily used in the pulp and paper industry for elemental chlorine-free pulp bleaching. It is produced at facilities in several countries and shipped under the brand Eka® SC in various forms and packaging. The production process is energy-intensive and involves electrolysis, but advancements in electrode design have reduced energy consumption and emissions, with hydrogen gas as a valuable side stream product. Manufacturing facilities are strategically located near renewable energy sources and customer sites to utilize bio-based energy and minimize the carbon footprint.

Sustainable Hydrogen Peroxide Solutions for Diverse Industries

Hydrogen Peroxide is an environmentally friendly oxidizing agent used in various industries, including pulp bleaching, mining, and water treatment. It is produced at facilities in Norway, Sweden, Brazil, and the USA, and offered as stabilized aqueous solutions under the brand Eka® HP. The anthraquinone auto-oxidation process, improved by a patented fixed-bed catalyst, ensures efficient production with minimal emissions, while utilizing renewable energy sources wherever possible. Our Eka® HP PuroxideTM product uses fossil-free hydrogen gas, achieving a near-zero carbon footprint and delivering products via low-emission transport options.

Eka® from the 1890's to today

As part of the former Swedish Nobel Industries, we can trace our history all the way back to the 1640's. Our own proud history starts in 1898 when Alfred Nobel, the founder of the Nobel Prize, was among those who started EKA -Elektrokemiska Aktiebolaget. Chlorine and alkali were our first products. Now we manufacture sodium chlorate, hydrogen peroxide and chlorine dioxide for the pulp and paper industry.

1646
Bofors forge is founded in Sweden.

1895
Elektrokemiska Aktiebolaget (EKA®) founded in Bengtsfors, Sweden by Alfred Nobel (founder of the Nobel Prize), C. W. Collander and Managing Director Rudolf Liljeqvist. Chlorine and alkali are the first products.

1924
EKA® moves to Bohus, north of Göteborg.

1927
EKA® manufactures 3,000 tons of chemicals in Bohus. Production of water glass starts.

1930
Many new chemicals are added to the product range; i.e. ferric chloride, hydrochloric acid and hydrogen peroxide.

1951
EKA® is acquired by the forest company, Iggesunds Bruk AB.

1956
Start of ammonia production.

1983
Growth of paper chemicals, based on Compozil. Subsidiary established in Finland.
