In Brazil, our innovative Integrated manufacturing model (also known as Chemical Islands) contributes to a lower carbon and manufacturing footprint for some of the world’s most essential paper products which include packaging, tissue, diapers, kitchen towel, and printing and writing paper.
Our integrated manufacturing models are state-of-the-art facilities located right next to a customer's pulp mill, often inside the perimeter fence. Our customers benefit from a tried, tested and successful concept managed and operated – on site, 24/7 – by our experts who ensure consistent production and delivery of chemicals needed to operate the mill. At a typical location, we manufacture sodium chlorate and generate chlorine dioxide that is then pumped directly to a pulp mill; depending on the individual customers' needs, we can also manage all the logistics for the other chemicals required for their pulp mill operation.
The model contributes to the circular economy within each partner’s value chain. Modern pulp mills normally generate excess utilities (e.g., electricity and steam from the pulping process) that can be used in other manufacturing processes. Powered by renewable biomass generated by the pulp partner, Nouryon’s Integrated Manufacturing Model effectively reduces the carbon footprint for operations while simultaneously producing chemicals more efficiently. On-site sodium chlorate production also reduces transportation requirements. The combined result is an efficient, safe, and sustainable production and delivery of bleaching chemicals, while reducing environmental impact and providing socio-environmental opportunities.
